“Little Murders” Opens Friday February 26th

Young Patsy Newquist brings her new boyfriend home to meet her parents. Her parents are at first pleased, until they find out that the new boyfriend is something of a nihilist and is a photographer who specializes in taking pictures of… shit. And of course all of this happens while the city is in the midst of a growing crime wave, ever present power outages, and a myriad of other problems…

Welcome to the world of “Little Murders,” Theatre ‘d Art’s latest production and the third in its Season of Illusions. Originally written in 1967 by Jules Feiffer partially in response to the Kennedy assassination and the crime wave that gripped New York City, this play is no less relevant, or hilarious, today. As we modern Americans continue come to grips (or not) with the aftermath of September 11th,the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention the growing crime and supposed deterioration of our own little city, the themes of “Little Murder” resonate greatly today. Explore the self induced illusions of the not so bizarre characters as they try to survive the 60’s and see if you can spot a few little murders of your own in our modern world…

T’dA Presents: “The Illusion”

From September 11th through the 27th THEATRE ‘D ART presents “The Illusion,” Tony Kushner’s “free adaptation” of Pierre Corneille’s 17th century comedy “L’ Illusion Comique.” This production will be performed at The Osborne Studio Theater on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00pm. The Osborne Studio Theater is located on the second floor of UCCS’ University Hall at the corner of Union and Austin Bluffs. Tickets will be $10 for general admission, $5 for students with a valid ID and free for UCCS students.

“The Illusion” follows the story of a remorseful father, Pridamant, seeking news of his prodigal son in the cave of the sorcerer Alcandre. The sorcerer shows him three visions; vignettes from the young man’s life. Inexplicably, each scene finds the boy in a slightly different world where names change and allegiances shift. Pridamant watches, but only as the strange tale reaches its conclusion does he learn the ultimate truth about his son. In his adaptation of this play, Tony Kushner compresses five acts in to two, adds several scenes of his own invention, and creates a style that, while still feeling classical, has very contemporary sensibilities. While the tone of Illusion is markedly lighter then Kushner’s best known play “Angels in America,” it shares the poetic language and theatrical quality that play is known for.

Directed by THEATRE ‘D ART co-founder and artistic director Jonathan Margheim, “The Illusion” is the first full-length production of THEATRE ‘D ART’s 2009-2010 “season of illusions.” During this season, THEATRE ‘D ART presents four full length productions all of which deal with the notion of alternate realities and worlds, how reality and fiction interplay and how the stage can be more real than we think it is. In the words of the director, “The Illusion is about love and theatre. The intangible vs the tangible, illusion vs reality. The play gives the example: a man is murdered onstage and you are moved by the tragedy, then a short time later, the murderer and murdered are smiling and holding hands onstage, taking bows. The moment that caused that emotional response was a lie, an illusion. Does that make the emotional experience any less real? Any less valuable? The same can be asked of love.” THEATRE ‘D ART invites everyone to experience this play and explore the world it presents and draw their own conclusions regarding this subject.

This is a quick shout out to all of you cool people who came to the T’dA appreciation BBQ on Saturday the 20th of June.  We all had a terrific time eating hamburgers and supplying you all with entertainment in the form of fake pies being thrown into a variety of peoples faces.

Furthermore I wanted to point out that we still have a good stock pile of NEW T’dA T-shirts available.  The kind that are hand made with love and spray paint. They are for sale for $10 though we do not have a good way of selling them online for the moment but if you are interested in purchasing one, email us at info@theatredart.org and tell us you want one. We’ll get it to you, promise.

We are in the process of getting some nicer (aka professionally made) t-shirts and those should be available when our season opens August 14th.  Check the other blog for more info on our season and stuff.

Also, for those of you who came by, you may have noticed some swanky posters  hanging on our walls.  Those posters are part of our summer awareness/advertising campaign and you may see them hanging around town in the weeks to come.

Thats it for this blog… onto the next!!!
